Meet Cowboy - lovebug, fetch lover, playmate, and truly one of the best boys all around! Cowboy is a 9-year-old, low to medium energy, 65-pound standard Aussie who came into the rescue after his family wasn’t able to properly manage his Lupus, which led to terrible bleeding on his nose. Cowboy appears to have Discoid Lupus Erythematosus (DLE), confined to his nose (i.e. is not systemic). Thanks to a proper treatment and maintenance regimen however, we can happily say that his flare-ups have remained at bay and his symptoms are under control. Cowboy will need to continue his maintenance regimen of daily vitamins and nose balms, as well as a twice/week low-dose steroid for life (total monthly cost $45). Additionally, due to his Lupus, his nose is EXTREMELY sensitive to UV light, so sun exposure must be limited to avoid any flare ups. Sunscreen helps for midday walks or trips. Rest assured that treatment for Cowboy’s Lupus has been extremely manageable with the correct, easy to follow regimen and such an accommodating dog!

The sweetest and most easy-going boy, Cowboy hasn’t met a dog or person he doesn’t get along with. For him, dog parks are the perfect place to meet new dog pals, play a game of fetch and even get in a few scratches from new human friends. Cowboy also enjoys going on walks so that he can be on the lookout for squirrels and stop and sniff everything around him. These kinds of activities, along with a proper diet, have helped Cowboy lose 11 pounds while in foster care. He currently has a goal weight of about 60 pounds to be at a healthy weight for his size. He just had a check-up with the vet and all bloodwork looks good at this time.

Cowboy is very well-mannered which makes him the perfect companion to join you on any and all sorts of adventures! He has been to the pet store, patio cafes, outdoor markets, the golf course, and even the hair salon. If there is a sign that says, “dogs welcome,” you can be assured Cowboy will love joining along! He isn’t much of a barker but will do a happy whimper and grumble when he sees another dog he just has to meet or while on the couch enjoying some cuddle time with his person. Cowboy has also done great while left alone and typically finds a quiet place to nap while you’re gone. He is fine with cats and though he has not been with kids while in foster care, his previous lifelong family said he is good with them.

Cowboy is up to date on all vaccinations, neutered, microchipped, and current on heartworm and flea prevention. He is being fostered in Dallas and is available for adoption in Texas and some areas of Oklahoma only. If chosen for adoption, you must be able to travel to Dallas within 7 days of application approval.
