Fosters are what make our organization go, go, go! The more fosters we have, the more pups we can welcome into safe, loving environments before they are ready to be adopted into permanent, forever homes.
The LSAR Foster Program is simple: We supply the pet, just add food, shelter and love! We will take care of all approved veterinary costs (including medications) for your LSAR foster pet. We just ask you treat them like one of your own; give them food/water, a soft, safe place to lay their head, and lots of love.
You do not have to be a dog whisperer to apply! No degree or special training is required. But make no mistake, fosters are indeed very special people! Fosters must be loving, patient, giving and dedicated. If this sounds like you, we'd be delighted to have you on our team!
Please note: A complete (and approved) application, as well as a home visit are required to join the LSAR Foster Program. We are currently "recruiting" fosters within our service area only. Please apply to foster if you currently reside within Texas or Oklahoma.
FOSTER PROGRAM
DOTTIE
Stats: female, 4 months old
Location: Austin, TX
Adoption Fee: $325
If you want the definition of cute, happy, and bouncy, it’s Dottie! This 4-month-old deaf baby is ALL about the attention and tackles the world with the same enthusiasm as any hearing dog. She currently weighs 12 lbs. and we believe she is a mini Aussie, so will probably mature around an ideal weight of 30 lbs. This happy girl is ready for her forever home – a home with another easy going, playful dog, and lots of continued socialization inside and outside of the home would be ideal. She’ll be a great dog for outings, travel, and companionship!
Dottie goes to work with her foster dad, sleeping happily in the backseat on the drive. She’s mastered stairs and elevators – not scary at all! She’s interested in what’s going on and wants to greet everyone. If she’s feeling left out, she will whine to let her needs be known.
At home, Dottie is a happy, easy to train puppy. She knows sit and is learning other commands regularly. She can learn every bit of what a hearing dog can and the sky is the limit on fun activities for her! Even though Dottie hasn’t been able to go on walks until she was fully vaccinated for her safety, she does well on in-house leash work. She’s mastering potty training – she’ll let you know when she wants to go out, so long as you keep an eye out for her signals.
While Dottie is deaf, thanks to three resident dogs who have been her tour guides, playmates and boundary setters, she’s learned to follow their lead in new situations, and communicates with her humans just fine.
When it’s bedtime, this little girl goes into her crate happily. Or some nights, if she’s tired enough, you might find her on your pillow waiting for everyone to join her. Regardless of where she calls it a night, she’ll usually sleep without a peep until it’s time to rise and shine in the morning. Dottie has been left alone for up to 3 hours and sleeps contentedly in her crate while alone. The girl is a great napper!
In typical puppy fashion, Dottie is an explorer, and anything is fair game to be picked up, chewed on, and scattered about. She has become a toilet paper artist, so keep the bathroom door closed or you will discover her latest creation. Expect a puppy who will continue to explore her world for the next few months which means things of value need to be kept in a safe place.
Dottie is up to date on age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipped, and on monthly Heartworm prevention. She will be adopted out on with the requirement to be spayed by one year of age.
Dottie is being fostered in Austin and will require the adopter to travel to meet her within 7 days of approval. If you already have an application on file with us, contact us to let us know you are interested in Dottie.
