Playful dog in the home
Meet Harley! She is a 1 year old, medium energy, Mini Aussie. She is working on getting to her ideal weight, and is only a lb away from 30 lbs! It is extremely important for her hip and overall joint health that she stay at a lean (less than average) weight and any adopter must be committed to keeping her at this weight. Harley loves to play with toys, cuddle, wrestle with her doggy sibling, and follow her person all around the house!
Harley came to us as an older puppy with genetic bilateral hip dysplasia that was affecting her at that point. For the past few months, Harley has been kept active and completed physical rehab, and luckily her muscle and function in her hind legs has drastically improved to the point the orthopedic specialist said there is no need for any corrective surgery or continued rehab at this time! There is a 30% chance she may need surgery in the future depending on how her body matures, so any adopter will need to keep this in mind as this type of surgery (Femoral Head Ostectomy or Total Hip Replacement) can be pricey.
Harley is quite physically active and loves to go on walks, hikes, swims, and running with her dog friends at the dog park! Keeping her physically active is crucial for maintaining her muscle and hip health. In order to reach her weight goals and continuing building muscle around her joints, Harley has enjoyed 1.5 mile walks most days, with an occasional 3 mile trail and visits to the local dog park to run and play a couple of times a week. While she doesn’t have many physical limitations, she does occasionally get sore when she overdoes it, so she isn’t suited for a high activity, sport home.
Like a typical one year old, Harley loves to chew, but is learning she should stick with the acceptable chew toys. She enjoys playing with a variety of toys, especially the crinkling ones, and will occasionally play fetch. At night, she sleeps in her crate. She goes right in and falls asleep. In the mornings, she is recharged and ready for walks or playtime! She is fully house trained.
Harley does well on leash. She needs an occasional reminder to “leave it” and wishes she could say hello to every dog she passes. This sweet gal knows basic commands and is willing to learn more. She does best with consistent, positive reinforcement and is eager to please.
While shy at first, Harley is warming up to meeting new people. She is great with kids and other dogs that she has met out, but she has not been fostered in a home with children. Harley enjoys riding in the car. She doesn’t want to be left out and loves when she can go places with her person. She likes to cuddle on the couch, and she will definitely steal your seat when you get up!
Harley is being fostered in the HOUSTON area and is available for adoption in Texas and some areas of Oklahoma. If chosen for adoption, you must be able to travel to Houston within 7 days.
