Fosters are what make our organization go, go, go! The more fosters we have, the more pups we can welcome into safe, loving environments before they are ready to be adopted into permanent, forever homes.
The LSAR Foster Program is simple: We supply the pet, just add food, shelter and love! We will take care of all approved veterinary costs (including medications) for your LSAR foster pet. We just ask you treat them like one of your own; give them food/water, a soft, safe place to lay their head, and lots of love.
You do not have to be a dog whisperer to apply! No degree or special training is required. But make no mistake, fosters are indeed very special people! Fosters must be loving, patient, giving and dedicated. If this sounds like you, we'd be delighted to have you on our team!
Please note: A complete (and approved) application, as well as a home visit are required to join the LSAR Foster Program. We are currently "recruiting" fosters within our service area only. Please apply to foster if you currently reside within Texas or Oklahoma.

CHEWIE
Stats: 5 years old, male
Location: Dallas, TX
Intake: 4/19/2025
Adoption Fee: $275
Social: #Chewie302
AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION - CHEWIE
Chewie is a low-medium energy Mini Aussie who is 35 pounds and 5 years old. He is fully blind, but he doesn’t let that slow him down! It is amazing to watch him mentally map out a new space so he can navigate with ease during his zoomie sessions.
He is very smart, a quick learner, and has learned many cues to help him navigate without being able to see: step up, step down, stay with me, watch me, watch out, slow down, let’s go, walk straight, right, left. He also knows basic commands: sit, stay, settle, all the way, roll over, and place. He is crazy food-motivated and will do anything for a treat, making him a fun training dog.
Chewie is an expert at tracking down squeaky toys (yes, even as a blind dog, he loves to play fetch with larger plush toys!), wrestling with his foster brother, chewing on a bone, and going on structured/working walks with his foster mom around the park/playground. He even does well off leash on hikes, can navigate the path, knows to stay close, and has a solid recall. Chewie has been to dog-friendly patios/restaurants and even kids’ soccer games. He is comfortable with strangers petting him and new dogs sniffing him. He does great riding in the car, and his foster parents will sometimes bring him along on errands just so he can ride along. He loves to snuggle up with his foster parents on the couch or bed.
While he loves to wrestle with other dogs and chase them while they play fetch, he does not need another dog in the home, and would be okay with having frequent playdates. He has lived with cats, but avoids them as much as he can and has never tried to chase them.
Chewie is house-trained and can be trusted to free roam when his foster family is not home. He is also crate trained, but does not need to be crated.
He was originally adopted as a puppy through LSAR, but after some reactive behaviors towards the family’s new baby, and a change in family habits, they were no longer able to give him a home where he could thrive. His foster parents have not observed any reactive behavior towards humans or small children, though they have seen some resource guarding with other dogs.
Chewie is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, neutered, and on monthly Heartworm and flea prevention.
He is being fostered in Dallas and will require the adopter to travel to meet him within 7 days of approval. His adoption fee is $275 and you can complete an adoption application. If you already have an application on file with us, you can contact us saying you are interested in Chewie.
We are currently accepting out-of-state applicants who are able to comply with our adoption requirements.
Please note: All our dogs are adopted as inside pets and family members only and all current or past pets in the home must have proof of being kept up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm prevention - NO EXCEPTIONS!
