We've named her Phoenix in hopes she will rise up healthy and strong after this...

Oh boy... where do we start with this one? We're not exaggerating when we say we easily get at least a dozen requests to help dogs each day. One of those requests today was an email before 5am about this sweet 9-week old baby in a crowded big city shelter who was struggling with sickness due to Hookworms and scheduled to be humanely euthanized if not pulled by a rescue group. Her picture looked pitiful but not like she was on death's door (see 1st pic of her sitting up, eyes open, alert, but dull). Our team saw her and got to work. Three of our LSAR Alum families stepped up to say they would help foster her. Another wonderful LSAR Alum said she would pick her up and get her to the Emergency Clinic for us.

She picked her up from the shelter midday and drove her straight to the EC. The puppy she got was nothing like the puppy in the picture. She was crashing, and fast. She was laid out from the minute they handed her over at the shelter. She took two big breaths as they exited the building, smelling that fresh air that meant freedom and hopefully salvation, but didn't move from that position. Our kind volunteer said she prayed the whole way that this sweet, tiny girl would live long enough to get to the EC for help.

The EC took her straight back to try and stabilize her. She was running a stiff fever for a pup, high WBC, anemic, kidney values elevated likely due to dehydration, essentially nonresponsive, and she threw up along with having diarrhea while there. They tested her again for Parvo and it tested negative again, but has all the hallmarks of that nasty, often fatal disease. Our volunteer was able to go back and see her and stroke her little face and she barely opened her eyes. She's now hospitalized at the EC for 3-5 days, depending on how she does. She can use all the prayers and positive energy to pull through this. We weren't expecting a major hospitalization bill today (estimated $3,900-$5,500), but we sure hope we can help this sweet baby get her happy forever after.
