Fosters are what make our organization go, go, go! The more fosters we have, the more pups we can welcome into safe, loving environments before they are ready to be adopted into permanent, forever homes.
The LSAR Foster Program is simple: We supply the pet, just add food, shelter and love! We will take care of all approved veterinary costs (including medications) for your LSAR foster pet. We just ask you treat them like one of your own; give them food/water, a soft, safe place to lay their head, and lots of love.
You do not have to be a dog whisperer to apply! No degree or special training is required. But make no mistake, fosters are indeed very special people! Fosters must be loving, patient, giving and dedicated. If this sounds like you, we'd be delighted to have you on our team!

Dixie is a 2-year-old, 37-pound Standard Australian Shepherd with a gentle spirit and a calm, loving personality. She is a lower-energy Aussie who has overcome a difficult start in life. As one of our NOLA 7, Dixie had very little exposure to new people or the outside world before coming into rescue, but she has made tremendous progress and continues to blossom every day.
Dixie gets along wonderfully with other dogs, although she has not yet been tested with cats. While she enjoys a good wrestling match or a fun game of chase in the yard, she's not an overly active dog. After about 10 minutes of play, she's usually ready to relax and enjoy some downtime.
Because she still gains confidence from other dogs, Dixie will require a friendly, outgoing canine companion in her adoptive home to help continue her socialization journey. She loves collecting toys and chewing on bones. Dixie still has strong motherly instincts and often gathers toys into her bed until she has built herself a cozy little collection. Her favorite times to play are during the cooler mornings and evenings, and she especially enjoys a nightly wrestling session before bedtime.
Although Dixie can still be a bit timid at times, she is becoming more comfortable with people every day. She is truly a Velcro dog who loves being near her people. If she's not right beside you, she'll likely be keeping you in sight from across the room. She enjoys cuddling on the couch or bed and gets especially excited when her family comes home, making sure to greet them with plenty of hugs, kisses, and affection.
Dixie is house-trained, crate-trained, knows how to use a doggie door, and can be trusted with free roam of the home. She enjoys her daily walks and walks nicely on a leash, although she can be somewhat nervous when encountering other people or unfamiliar dogs. She rides well in the car and behaves well in public. New environments such as stores or the veterinarian's office can still make her nervous, and she looks to her handler for reassurance and comfort during those situations. She is currently learning basic commands and already knows sit, shake, and come.
Dixie would thrive in a patient, understanding home that can continue building her confidence. She has not been tested with children and would likely be happiest in a home without young or rambunctious kids. Because of her social nature and reliance on other dogs for confidence, a home with a confident, playful canine companion would be ideal.
Dixie is up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, spayed, and maintained on monthly heartworm and flea prevention.
