Fosters are what make our organization go, go, go! The more fosters we have, the more pups we can welcome into safe, loving environments before they are ready to be adopted into permanent, forever homes.
The LSAR Foster Program is simple: We supply the pet, just add food, shelter and love! We will take care of all approved veterinary costs (including medications) for your LSAR foster pet. We just ask you treat them like one of your own; give them food/water, a soft, safe place to lay their head, and lots of love.
You do not have to be a dog whisperer to apply! No degree or special training is required. But make no mistake, fosters are indeed very special people! Fosters must be loving, patient, giving and dedicated. If this sounds like you, we'd be delighted to have you on our team!
Please note: A complete (and approved) application, as well as a home visit are required to join the LSAR Foster Program. We are currently "recruiting" fosters within our service area only. Please apply to foster if you currently reside within Texas or Oklahoma.

Meet Smokey! Smokey is a 7-year-old male Standard Aussie/Border Collie mix, weighing about 40 pounds, and he’s as sweet as he is smart. Smokey is a medium-energy boy who loves nothing more than chasing balls. If you’re willing to throw, he’s willing to play—and he’ll keep going as long as you do! He’s a patient boy, and does not bark to demand the next toss. While he enjoys runs on the trail, neighborhood walks, and playing with balls and soft toys, Smokey is never hyperactive. He’s the perfect mix of fun and calm.
Smokey is a polite housemate and a loyal companion. He’s fully housebroken, has great leash manners, and can be trusted to roam the house when you’re away—no separation anxiety. He’s happy riding in the car and always ready for an adventure. Smokey knows his basics—sit, down, off, leave it, and recall—and he’s well-behaved both on and off leash.
When meeting new people, Smokey can be a little shy at first and may give a couple of warning barks, but he settles quickly—especially if you toss him a ball or offer a treat. He’s protective of his home and family without being aggressive and calms down quickly. With other dogs, Smokey is polite but not very interested in playing. He’s not a dog-park kind of guy; he prefers small groups or just hanging out with his humans. He hasn’t lived with another dog and has not been tested with cats. He hasn’t shown signs of resource guarding with food or toys and has never shown signs of aggression.
Smokey loves being around his people but doesn’t cling to one person. He’s happiest when he’s part of the family—whether that’s fetching balls in the park, hiking a trail, or relaxing at home. He has great recall, loves stuffed toys almost as much as balls, and is always well-behaved in public places. If you’re looking for a fun, loyal, and low-drama adventure buddy, Smokey is a perfect fit.
Smokey is neutered, up to date on vaccinations, microchipped, heartworm negative, and on monthly prevention.
Smokey is being fostered in Austin and will require the adopter to travel to meet him within 7 days of approval. His adoption fee is $275 and you can complete an adoption application. If you already have an application on file with us, you can contact us saying you are interested in Smokey.
Please note: All our dogs are adopted as inside pets and family members only and all current or past pets in the home must have proof of being kept up to date on vaccinations and Heartworm prevention - NO EXCEPTIONS!
